Park home insurance

#0, by bounty34, 01 August 2011 09:41 AM

Just moved into a park home - love it - but did not realize it would be so difficult to get insurance cover.  Trying to insure valuable items of jewellery and watches that we wear when we travel abroad and the majority of insurers seem to cover in the UK only.  Do insurers think that people who live in park homes don't have items of value and that they don't travel outside the UK?  Then when I do find an insurer who will cover us, the annual premium is five times what my premium was for our 4-bed detached house!

I call this discriminatory.

Anyone out there who knows of an insurer who will cover high-value items in both the UK and worldwide and not charge exhorbitant premiums?

Hi Bounty34 and welcome to our forum

I have never heard of the difficulty in getting insurance cover before, unless you live on the side of a river!

Have you tried theinsurance companies listed on our website? You can find them here.

Many thanks Ed and Gary, have now insured with Lifesure.  However, we are under-insured unfortunately in the case of total loss of all contents including valuables as the maximum Lifesure will cover for contents is £40k, excluding named items.  But at least our most valuable items are now covered worldwide.

Best regards.

Food for thought i pay £240 insurance value of my property £100,000 inc contents, some one who lives by me was paying £280 and he found an insurance company who asked him to find out how much his place was worth and how much to transport it

He phoned the park home manufacturer and was gobsmacked to find out the cots of his home was £53.000 and £3000 to transport it from the factory in Cornwall thats a total of £56,000 and he paid £90,000 so he got a quote of £160 he is very disillusioned as he said the owner made £34,000 off him in his words a rob dog and i have got to give him 10% when i sell it

does sound a big "gain", but ..........

who bought the land (the site), who developed it into a site, who laid the drains, water, electricity, gas, made the roads with street lighting, who laid a base with services so convenient for the unit to be delivered and easily hooked up to the services.

and of course, when you sell, you dont just sell a unit, you sell the unit already sited. The latter being worth a lot more then the former.

you could build a nice house for say £80,000, but a builder would market that for say £180,000 maybe more depending on location. Not all "gain" because he too has to buy the land (which is very expensive these days), put the utilities in, roads, lighting etc.

I understand our site recently changed hands for about £800,000 with 38 units on. Thats a lot of money to invest, glad I dont have that mortgage. The park owner has to make a return on that investment and at the same time live up to the responsibilities of maintaining a site.

So long as the park owner lives up to his/her responsibilities fully, I dont begrudge them any of the charges they make.

Personally I think I would rather just invest the money rather then have the hassle of running a park.
